We woke up to a beautiful blanket of snow this morning. It was so pretty. I marvel at the snow. There is something about all those individual snowflakes floating to the ground that just makes me happy. What a creative God! Just before Christmas I picked up a snowflake bracelet that has a saying on it. “God made you unique just like a snowflake.” I like that.
Dad and I went to put some Valentine flowers on Momma’s grave today. It has been a long time since he and I were out together traipsing around in the snow. He made sure I had on appropriate boots and off we went. It was a good day.
As I was on my way home, something occurred to me. The children were out of school because of the snow today. Here it was late in the afternoon and I didn’t see one sledded hillside anywhere I looked. When I was a kid and there was a snow day, we were outside sled riding! Some of my favorite memories as a kid are the ones of the guys in the neighborhood coming up to where we lived and us spending hours packing the hill to get it just right. When it was finally packed – buddy, we flew down that hill. Sometimes four or five of us stacked on top of each other laughing all the way. We got snow in our faces, we landed in creeks, we tried our best to avoid the corner house and its basement window, and we had hours and hours of some of the best fun of being a kid.
As much fun as it was, it was work. We put in quite a few ten-minute treks up the hill to come down it in what seemed like 30 seconds flat! Do you suppose that is why I saw no sled covered hills today? Do our children of this age really understand that some of the best times are those things you exhaust yourself for? Are our children today inside watching the Winter X-games on the TV and watching the skiers and jumpers being hauled up the hills on the 4 wheelers? I bet those being hailed at the X-games didn’t start out having some one to haul them up to the hilltop.
I stopped to take some pictures of the snow on my way up our road. In the beauty of it all I still felt the urge to trek the hilltop. If this “26″ year-old body still landed like it once did I might have tried it. Guess I will just have to watch the X-games for the thrill of coming down a snow packed hillside!
